Arale Reartes belongs to a generation of women photographers who understand the image as a space of intimate revelation. Born in Barcelona, her practice unfolds through self-portraiture and slow, almost meditative processes, where time is not a technical resource but an emotional substance. In her work, photographing is not merely capturing; it is exposing oneself, inhabiting oneself, and allowing experience to transform the image. Her sensitivity turns the everyday into a territory charged with meaning, where the visible and the invisible engage in a delicate dialogue.
Habitar la otra, proposes an intimate and quiet gesture: looking at friendship as a territory built in two temporalities. Far from any idealized notion of love, the series settles into that subtler space where the bond is not declared, but inhabited.
The project emerges from a concrete geographical distance. Barcelona and New York exchanging places over time, but what truly unfolds is a reflection on how affection survives displacement. Cities change, routines reverse; the bond, in contrast, finds new ways to sustain itself. The camera records this slow passage, this almost ritual process in which the passing of time is redefined.
The images form a portrait of recognition, of the experience of discovering oneself reflected in someone else. There is something profoundly contemporary in this series: friendship as a conscious choice, as a safe space where identity is rehearsed and expanded.
The most essential bonds do not need proclamation; they are built through the repetition of shared gestures, accumulated memory, and the quiet certainty of knowing oneself accompanied even across distance. More than documenting a relationship, the work explores how bonds transform us and how, by inhabiting the other, we also learn to inhabit ourselves.
