Natural Actives: Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a game-changer. Highly effective at preventing and reducing hyperpigmentation and slowing down oxidative damage, vitamin C is a brightening active ingredient that visibly fades dark spots and evens out the skin tone while reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin C is one of nature's most potent antioxidants. However, there are some myths about vitamin C that have been perpetuated and need to be debunked. Keep reading to find out everything you always wanted to know about this skin-repairing and brightening active ingredient: learn what vitamin C is, how to use it, what its benefits are and why it's a must-have in any skin care routine, whatever your skin type.

What’s Vitamin C?
Scientifically known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient renowned for its antioxidant properties and its ability to enhance the skin's natural defenses. Derived from leafy green vegetables and citrus fruits, vitamin C plays a vital role in supporting collagen synthesis, the structural protein responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. This makes it an indispensable ally in addressing signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles and dullness, by promoting a plump and supple complexion.

Moreover, vitamin C acts as a formidable defender against free radicals – unstable molecules generated by UV rays and environmental pollutants. By neutralizing these free radicals, vitamin C helps shield the skin from oxidative stress, preventing premature aging and contributing to a more youthful appearance. As a brightening natural active, it’s able to inhibit melanin production and assists in fading dark spots and promoting a more even complexion.

Since the human body cannot synthesize vitamin C, we get this essential vitamin mainly through the regular intake of fruits and vegetables. However, it’s unlikely that dietary vitamin C reaches the skin in a significant amount. The most effective method to enhance the concentration of vitamin C in the skin involves topical application.

But not all forms of topical vitamin C are created equal. L-ascorbic acid is the purest form. However, it’s prone to oxidation, meaning it can lose its efficacy when exposed to air, light and high temperatures; also, it might produce some compounds that can cause irritation for those with very sensitive skin. For that reason, we have formulated our Vitamin C Booster with vegan liposomal Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, a 100% plant-based form of vitamin C that comes encapsulated for deeper penetration, improved stability and absorption, long-lasting effects, and maximum results. Unlike other forms of vitamin C, liposomal Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is brightening active well-tolerated even for sensitive skin.
What are the benefits of adding vitamin C to your skincare routine?
Antioxidant and brightening, vitamin C plays an essential role in protecting the skin against external aggressors, addressing signs of ageing such as wrinkles, fine lines and elasticity loss and, additionally, reducing pigmentation for a more radiant and even complexion. Discover the benefits of vitamin C.

Neutralizes free radicals
Our skin, being the largest organ, acts as a frontline defender against external stressors, such as UV rays and pollution. Vitamin C plays a crucial role in protecting the skin from free radicals – unstable molecules that can accumulate on the skin, damage cells and accelerate the appearance of signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines or dark spots. Research shows that, by neutralizing these free radicals, vitamin C acts as a shield, preventing premature aging and contributing to a more youthful complexion.

Brightens and evens out the skin
Exposure to stressors and free radical damage can accelerate the skin’s natural production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. As a result, age spots, sun spots and other forms of hyperpigmentation might appear. Studies have demonstrated that, consistently applied, vitamin C is able to inhibit melanin production and promote its degradation, giving the skin a more even tone and a brighter, youthful-looking appearance.

Promotes elasticity
Collagen, the structural protein responsible for skin’s firmness and elasticity, tends to decline as we age, leading to deeper wrinkles and fine lines. However, vitamin C has shown its ability to stimulate collagen synthesis, promoting a more supple, firmer complexion and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Boosts radiance
By protecting the skin against external aggressors, stimulating collagen production, and inhibiting melanin production, vitamin C effectively promotes brightness. As a result, it strengthens the skin’s natural barrier and it’s more able to lock in moisture, which contributes to a plumper, brighter revitalized complexion.

Soothes inflammation
Inflammation is a common condition behind various skin concerns, from redness to acne breakouts. Vitamin C possesses anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe irritated skin and reduce redness. Whether you're dealing with acne or sensitive skin, incorporating vitamin C into your routine can provide a calming effect and a more relaxed complexion.
How does ROWSE’s Vitamin C Booster work?
Our concentrated boost works as a pre-serum. It contains vegan liposomal vitamin C (5%) and Phloretin (0.04%), a high-performance antioxidant and depigmenting active ingredient extracted from apples that helps protect the skin against environmental aggressors and reduces the appearance of age and sun spots. We have added soothing aloe vera and verbena hydrolate, and both high and low-weighted vegan hyaluronic acid for deep, long-lasting hydration and a replenish effect. As a result, the skin feels and looks softer, smoother and more radiant.

Is vitamin C safe to use on all skin types?
Vitamin C is a versatile ingredient that is usually well-tolerated by all skin types, including normal, dry, oily, and combination skin. In case of sensitive skin, it’s always recommended to perform a patch test before applying vitamin C products to the entire face, as some formulations may cause mild irritation. (Apply a small amount of product on your wrist and check for any reactions in 12-24 hours).
While non-stabilized pure ascorbic acid could cause irritation in some cases, our Vitamin C Booster has been formulated with liposomal sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a 100% plant-based, stable form of vitamin C that hasn’t shown adverse reactions and is sensitive-safe.

Is vitamin C pregnancy-safe?
As it happens with many skincare ingredients, there’s not enough scientific evidence to suggest that vitamin C can be used during pregnancy. However, no adverse effects have been reported so far, neither during breastfeeding. You can safely use it, as long as your doctor doesn’t advise against it.

Can I use vitamin C every day?
Daily use of vitamin C has been shown to provide cumulative benefits for the skin over time. Although you can use it at night, it’s often recommended for morning use, as it offers antioxidant support throughout the day. In any case, it's crucial to follow up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Can I combine vitamin C with niacinamide?
Absolutely. You can safely combine vitamin C and niacinamide. It won’t be problematic but a powerful beneficial combination that will visibly improve your skin’s health and appearance –our Vitamin C Booster works wonders with the All-Day Hydration Serum. However, pairing vitamin C with retinol can be too harsh for the skin, unless they are already blended to work together.

Can vitamin C cause sun sensitivity?
Vitamin C itself does not cause sun sensitivity; in fact, it is known for its antioxidant properties and its ability to help protect the skin from sun damage. However, it’s key to follow up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. The combination of vitamin C and sunscreen can work synergistically to enhance sun protection: vitamin C helps neutralize free radicals while sunscreen provides a physical barrier against UV radiation.

Will vitamin C stain or tan my skin?
No, vitamin C does not cause staining or tanning of the skin. Vitamin C is a water-soluble compound that is typically colorless and does not have the properties to alter the natural pigmentation of the skin or cause discoloration. What is likely to happen is that some forms of vitamin C tend to get oxidized once exposed to air, light, humidity or high temperatures. For that reason, we have formulated our vitamin C booster with vegan liposomal Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, a more stable and effective form of vitamin C; plus, it comes in a dark bottle to better preserve its benefits. Make sure you store your serum in a cool, dark place. Once opened, use within 9 months.
