Natural Actives: Melatonin

Popularly known for its role in regulating sleep, melatonin is also a highly active antioxidant that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improves the skin’s tone and texture.

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland, a small gland located in the brain. It plays a crucial role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle, also known as the circadian rhythm. The production and release of melatonin are influenced by the perception of light and darkness. When it's dark, the pineal gland increases melatonin production, signaling to the body that it's time to unwind and prepare for sleep.

Beyond its role in regulating sleep, melatonin is also recognized for its antioxidant properties and skin-renewal benefits. Applied topically, it complements the skin’s natural renewal and regeneration processes, which happen while we sleep.

By stimulating the skin’s natural defenses and neutralizing potentially harmful skin-stressors, melatonin helps prevent and repair wrinkles, fine lines and also photodamage. Additionally, it supports collagen and elastin production for a firmer, smoother, more supple complexion. Whilst botox may be quick at reducing wrinkles and fine lines, it’s a synthetic neurotoxin that works by paralyzing muscles. Highly active 100% plant-based active ingredients such as melatonin help maintain a youthful appearance with no toxics, no harm and no frozen appearance. Enjoy melatonin’s ‘no-tox’ effect!

How does melatonin work on the skin?

As we age, melatonin production tends to decrease, making it more difficult and slower for the skin to regenerate itself. Ideal for stressed, damaged and mature skin, topical melatonin works for all types of skin, whatever age you may be, as a natural way of reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improving the skin tone and texture.

— Antioxidant protection: melatonin is a potent antioxidant, and when applied topically, it may help neutralize free radicals generated by exposure to UV radiation, pollution, and other environmental stressors. This antioxidant activity can contribute to the prevention of oxidative stress, which is a key factor in the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and dark spots.
— Supports Collagen Synthesis: melatonin stimulates the synthesis of collagen, a protein that provides structural support to the skin. Collagen is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness, and tends to decrease as we age. By promoting collagen production, melatonin may contribute to a firmer, plumper complexion.
— Anti-Inflammatory effects: melatonin possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which may be helpful for soothing sensitive skin conditions such as rosacea and eczema.
— Repairs and regenerates: melatonin is involved in the natural repair and regeneration processes that occur during sleep. When applied topically, it may support the skin's ability to recover from daily damage and stress, resulting in a healthier and more rejuvenated complexion.
— Reduces hyperpigmentation: melatonin has been implicated in the regulation of melanin production. By influencing melanin synthesis, topical melatonin may contribute to a more even skin tone and help reduce hyperpigmentation or dark spots.

How to incorporate Melatonin into your skincare routine?

Designed to work synergistically with your skin's overnight natural repair processes, our Melatonin Sleeping Mask combines 100% plant-based, vegan melatonin, which comes encapsulated for deeper penetration and better preservation, with the radiance-boosting benefits of chia seed oil. We have also added lavender essential oil to promote relaxation and better sleep. Applied 1-2 weekly, it works as a powerful reset for your skin: helps lock in moisture, improves skin firmness and helps minimize visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines and dark spots. As a result, the skin looks and feels revitalized, more supple, radiant and ready to prevent the oxidative stress that occurs during the day.
Is Melatonin Sleeping Mask safe for all skin types?
Melatonin is generally well-tolerated by most skin types. Its gentle nature makes it suitable for sensitive skin, and can be incorporated into various skincare routines without causing irritation. However, if you are sensitive to oral  melatonin or experience adverse reactions, patch test is always recommended, especially for those prone to allergies or skin sensitivities. (Apply a small amount of product on your wrist and check for any reactions in 12-24 hours).

Is topical melatonin pregnancy-safe?
There’s not enough evidence to suggest that melatonin can be used during pregnancy, although that’s not the case during breastfeeding, when you can safely use topical melatonin with no adverse effects.

Are there any side effects?
There’s no risk of headaches, dizziness, or even those crazy dreams that some people report experiencing from the oral version.

Can you use the Melatonin Sleeping Mask during the daytime?
We have designed it as an overnight mask that works synergistically with your skin’s natural repair processes. It contains Lavender essential oil, which is highly photosensitive and therefore, not recommended during daytime.
