Skin ageing is a natural, complex process influenced by genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle habits. As we grow and age, the skin gets easily dehydrated and loses its ability to repair and regenerate itself. It naturally happens. It starts in our mid-20s or 30s, and it can become more visible around our 40s and 50s, and especially from our 60s onwards. Changes in skin include the breakdown of collagen and elastin, a loss of elasticity and firmness, fine lines and wrinkles and uneven pigmentation. Although there are many products and ingredients that offer anti-ageing benefits, not all of them are natural or safe for all skin types. The good news is that there’s a plant-based ingredient that can help keep your skin looking at its best despite the passing of time: Bakuchiol, the natural alternative to retinol.

What is Bakuchiol?

Extracted from the seeds and leaves of the Indian babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia), bakuchiol has been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayurvedic restorative medicine to help heal, soothe and calm the skin. Anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant, recent studies have shown that when used topically, this powerful antioxidant helps to prevent and reduces fine lines and wrinkles, improves elasticity and firmness, evens the skin tone and reduces acne.‌Bakuchiol works through the same receptors as retinol, which is why it's often referred to as the natural, vegan end effective alternative to retinol, a vitamin A-derived synthetical topical known for its ability to improve the skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. However, unlike retinol, which usually comes from animal sources, bakuchiol is ethically sourced, 100% plant-based, suitable for even the most sensitive skin and can be used on a daily basis with no adverse side effects.

How does Bakuchiol work?

Hydrating, firming, line-smoothing and brightening, skin-transforming bakuchiol has been shown to regulate the expression of genes and proteins involved in the skin ageing process. It helps the skin fight off free radical damage and other oxidative stress that leads to skin ageing and significantly improves the skin health and appearance for a visibly smoother, plumper and fresher-looking complexion.A 2019 study published in the British Journal of Dermatology found no difference between retinol and bakuchiol in treating visible signs of ageing. Even though the study was small, the results showed a significant improvement in lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, firmness and an overall reduction in photodamage after 12 weeks of treatment, using a concentration of 0.5% bakuchiol twice daily. Bakuchiol was found to be safe and effective even for the most sensitive skin: unlike retinol users, bakuchiol users didn’t experience any adverse effects such as skin dryness, burning, peeling, stinging or sun sensitivity.
— Stimulates skin cells to produce collagen, which helps to improve elasticity and firmness. As a result, a smoother, plumper skin and a visible improvement in fine lines and wrinkles.

— Inhibits melanin production, reduces photodamage and evens the skin tone for a brighter, more radiant and fresher-looking complexion.

— Regenerates the skin by increasing cell turnover. It helps the skin to remove the dead skin cells and replace them with new, fresh skin cells giving the appearance of smoother skin, refined texture and a more even skin tone.

— Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, bakuchiol helps prevent acne breakouts and reduces pigmented marks and scars for a refined, smoother texture.

How to use Bakuchiol?

Unlike synthetic retinol, it's safe to combine bakuchiol with other ingredients and use with other products in your skincare routine. You’ll find it across various products, from serums to lotions and moisturisers, in concentrations between 0.5-2%, which are ideal to get visible results.Because it's 100% plant-based and non-irritating, bakuchiol can be used on a daily basis. It’s also photostable, which means that it does not break down when exposed to UV rays and that it can be used not only at nighttime but also during daytime. Always remember to apply SPF for the best defence against sun exposure and photodamage.
Our new Regenerate Night Serum with Bakuchiol combines this powerful antioxidant (0.5%) with raspberry, primrose and rosehip oils, all rich in essential fatty acids and skin-restoring properties. Is bakuchiol safe for rosacea?

Is bakuchiol good for oily acne-prone skin?
Bakuchiol offers benefits for every skin type. It’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, non-comedogenic and able to reduce the appearance of breakouts, so it’s highly recommended for oily and acne prone skin.

Is bakuchiol safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
